This majestic fish, which can reach a length of up to 15 metres and weigh up to 12 tonnes, is threatened with extinction. It is a protected species. Its impressive size and unique pattern – spots on its back – make it easy to distinguish from other whales. These markings are as unique as human fingerprints.
Whale sharks may be impressive due to their immense size, but these ‘gentle giants’ of the oceans are harmless and non-aggressive.
They feed mainly on plankton, which they filter, as well as small fish and squid.
Whale sharks move slowly and leisurely through the water.
